27 June 2014, Johannesburg: A seven-day turnaround from receipt of order to the manufacture, shipment, installation and commissioning of a semi-mobile, skid-mounted screening plant is no mean feat in anybody’s language. Not least, when the site is some six hundred kilometres away.
However that’s the service Pilot Crushtec International recently produced in order to assist new customer BLACKMAGiC Logistics.
National sales manager Nicolan Govender explains that the company needed a small modular screening plant for use in its new contract to supply <6mm coke for the fuelling of a new sintering plant operated by Kalagadi Manganese, at Hotazel in the Northern Cape province.
“Kalagadi has acquired an Outotec sinter plant believed to be the largest of its type in the southern hemisphere. In view of the massive capital cost involved, there was an urgent need to start trial operations. BLACKMAGiC Logistics required a plant to screen out oversize product so that the furnace could run at its optimum level.”
The clock started ticking for the turnkey plant on a Tuesday evening and by the following Monday it was producing product exactly to specification and in the required volumes. This not only required a huge effort from Pilot Crushtec International’s internal production and technical staff but excellent cooperation from suppliers.
For example, the manufacturer of the plant’s optional electrical control panels drove through the night from Durban to ensure that these essential components were correctly installed prior to dispatch.
From BLACKMAGiC’s perspective, the addition of materials processing to its already substantial road freight operations has opened up the attractive proposition of providing similar services to other clients involved in the mining and construction industries.
“Our ability to provide a rapid turnaround combined with the relative ease of start-up has encouraged the customer to take a serious look at the crushing and screening industry and we are already discussing the suitability of additional equipment for similar applications,” says Govender.
Head of BLACKMAGiC is well known entrepreneur and former Mr. South Africa Paul Phume who has established a rapidly growing portfolio of successful business initiatives. These include road transport, logistics, events management, promotional activities, luxury car sales and processing of mine ore.
The equipment supplied to BLACKMAGiC Logistics comprises a Pilot Modular GFH560 grizzly feed hopper, a Pilot Modular DD3615 double deck screen and three Pilot Modular MC600 conveyors.
